Young Leadership as direction sign

The young leaders of today are the direction signs of tomorrow. Are these young leaders effectively different with the generation before them?

The global socio-economic agitation goes beyond financial issues. On all continents the population shows a movement of change. The globalised world increases our awareness of this. The movements are performed in different layers and different directions. These layers represent the classes of the community. On the top of these layers and in every layer itself there will always be leaders who want to create the best for themselves and more for others.

While the overall confidence decreases, the importance of mutual confidence becomes more and more important. To answer the actual question of sustainability in relation to a modern interpretation of solidarity local leaders should create enough space to fulfil this challenge. Their leadership go beyond the political arena. It also includes the extend of civil society, optimal use of talents in the education system and provide entrepreneurship.

Despite the centralised reference to the importance of self-reliance reality shows that significant groups of people do not comply with the needed preconditions. For example, youth unemployment still increases in both the EU and MENA. These circumstances are a stumbling block for youngsters in framing their way to the future. The disappearance of (personal) perspective reduces by many the need for active progress. They focus on survival. However, inspiring young community leaders are able to bring back this perspective. In their own way they act as role models and they make an active contribution to the world of tomorrow.

The required qualities and skills of leadership are unchanged in their core, but the circumstances in which this should be expressed is changing. Nevertheless, also the personal needs of the individual stay similar: from socio-economic recovery to sustainable growth and from creating opportunities to achieve success. The solution requires new skills, insights and daring. Which young community leaders show us the direction?

‘Young leadership als wegwijzer’

De jonge leiders van vandaag zijn de wegwijzers van morgen. Verschillen deze jonge leiders daadwerkelijk met de generatie voor hen?

De wereldwijde sociaaleconomische onrust reikt verder dan financiën. Op alle continenten merkt de bevolking een beweging van veranderingen. De globaliserende wereld versterkt het bewustzijn hiervan. De bewegingen vinden plaats in verschillende lagen en verschillende richtingen. Deze lagen vertegenwoordigen de klassen van de gemeenschap. Niet alleen bovenaan maar in iedere laag zullen er altijd leiders zijn die het beste willen maken voor zichzelf en anderen.

Daar waar het algemeen vertrouwen afneemt, is het belang van onderling vertrouwen des te belangrijker. Om het vraagstuk van verduurzaming in combinatie met een moderne invulling van solidariteit te beantwoorden, dient er daarom ruimte gecreëerd te worden door leiders in de wijken zelf. Dit leiderschap reikt verder dan de politieke arena. Het gaat ook om aansturing op het maatschappelijk middenveld, talenten benutten in het onderwijssysteem en ruimte bieden aan ondernemerschap.

Terwijl het individu wordt gewezen op het belang van zelfredzaamheid, ontbreken voor grote groepen mensen de randvoorwaarden om hieraan te kunnen voldoen. Zo stijgt zowel in de EU als MENA de werkloosheid onder jongeren. Voor deze jonge generaties is dit een struikelblok bij het uitstippelen van hun weg naar de toekomst. Het verdwijnen van perspectief vermindert bij velen de behoefte aan actieve vooruitgang. Zij richten zich op overleven.

Inspirerende young community leaders zijn echter in staat om het perspectief terug te brengen. Zij fungeren op hun eigen wijze als rolmodel en leveren een actieve bijdrage aan de wereld van morgen.

De toegedichte kwaliteiten van leiderschap zijn in de kern een onveranderd iets, maar de omstandigheden waarin dit dient te worden geuit veranderen wel. Het individu behoudt dezelfde behoeften: van sociaaleconomisch herstel naar duurzame groei, creëren van kansen en het bereiken van succes. De oplossing vraagt nieuwe vaardigheden, inzichten en durf.
